DMY Opening

DMY Opening

Come - see - enjoy! More than 2000 guests had a blast. By Birgit Bauer

Sound the alarm! The DMY opening evening took off with a bang – or indeed, several of them: sirens and explosions at the FH Potsdam stand made more than one visitor jump. But, hey, that’s how design happens too! Like a funfair, the event offered everything from steel-benders to a lovely porcelain painter. Sadly, the organisers were unable to coax Prof. Hermann Weizenegger (Design Duo Vogt & Weizenegger) into giving us a taste of his fortunetelling skills.

Not to be put off so easily, I discussed the future with design hierarchs such as Roberto Feo from El Ultimo Grito: “What I like about DMY is the atmosphere. I find work on the set particularly exciting. There really is fresh design to be discovered here, and the standard is also good – although I wasn’t in the jury (laughs)!”

Futher positive responses are already flooding in as dealers and producers enthuse over the Youngsters: “I find the density comfortable, it saves me too much walking around,” confides a jewellery producer enthusiastically, adding: “Besides, I already know what I am taking home with me.”

This year, in a wise strategic move, Couch and Couch DJ have positioned themselves next to the bar. Who said work couldn’t be fun? As for UNESCO speaker Merkel, her opening speech sparkled like champagne. “I wish the Youngsters much vim in their (net)working,” she declared while discussing her favourite design object (her Dyson vacuum cleaner) with DMY boss Jörg Suermann - and enjoyed herself well into the night. Not until four, admittedly, but even at that unholy hour the party was still banging.
