“Redesign: Traditional Korean Paper”

Application deadline: 15.08.2008

Each year since 2005, the Seoul Design Festival invites international designers to create new objects and concepts, inspired by traditional Korean materials and articles of daily use. “Redesign: Traditional Korean Paper” will be presented in December 2008 within the framework of the Seoul Design Festival. A follow-up exhibition at the DMY International Design Festival 2009 is currently in the works. Participating designers and their works will be featured in documentations produced for each exhibiton.

Call for Participation!

The Seoul Design Festival and DMY Berlin invite designers to develop new concepts around Hanji, the traditional Korean paper art. The idea is to create new objects and concepts made out of a traditional material.

Participants may develop individual themes. These can relate to traditional Korean applications, such as letterpress, painting, reliefs or objects, furniture and decorative applications. However, traditional applications can also be twisted around or used as a base for free inspiration.

Material

Within the framework of the current “Redesign” edition, each selected participant is entrusted with a roll of high-quality Hanji paper. The versatile, highly resistant and chemical-free paper serves as a basic material for the creation of one, or a series, of 2 or 3 dimensional objects. The use of additonal materials is not restricted.

Participation & Costs

Participation in the “Redesign” project is free. International designers working in all disciplines of design may apply. SDF and DMY Berlin assume all costs related to the transport of the objects to Seoul, return transport, exhibition design as well as all costs related to the organisation and public relations.
Participants bear the objects’ production costs, are responsible for their packaging and delivery to the DMY Office in Berlin.

With the designers’ agreement the objects will remain propriety of DMY Berlin for use in follow-up exhibitions. Upon their admittance by DMY Belin all participants will receive a project brief and a roll of Hanji paper that will serve as basic material for their designs.

Application

Applicants should submit a short statement describing their work, accompanied by a selection of own product/project images (max. 1 MB), as well as their contact details in time with the deadline.
