Berlin is a magnet for creatives from all over the world. There are plenty of reasons for this. The rapid changes of influences and trends that occur within this city or thrive in it result in an exciting patchwork of styles – an ideal breeding ground for dialogue, progress and intellectual growth.
Berlin does not only exert a powerful attraction on young people. An increasing number of people – especially artists and creatives – come to Berlin to work, to live and to stay. This mix reflects the spirit and the atmosphere of the city, which boasts an open and flexible attitude from which experiment and innovation flow naturally. In other words, this is the ideal site for a trendsetting event format.
In 2008, following six years of steady growth, DMY Berlin has laid the foundations for an internationally renowned design festival within and beyond Berlin. Thanks to a spate of highly varied exhibitions, shows and festival contributions featuring participants from all over the world, the Festival has established new contacts, strengthened existing relationships and expanded cooperation projects that find their expression in the current DMY Asia Exhibition Tour 2008 in Taiwan, Japan and South Korea, as well as in the various DMY Contributions to European festivals, from London to Vienna and from Prague to St. Etienne.
This is the direction that DMY Berlin strives to pursue: originally a Berlin-based platform for young, experimental design, DMY International Design Festival Berlin since 2008 includes established designers and design studios, as well as institutions and museums, in its concept. In this way, DMY Berlin initiates and fuels exchanges within the global design scene on an interdisciplinary and active level. In focussing on creators and their philosophy, the Festival thus generates each year a platform that puts design and its creative processes in the foreground.
Given these facts, it comes as no surprise that such a format should result in an influential Festival!
DMY in June
With the festival taking place in June, as opposed to our previous May editions, DMY Berlin reacts to the shift in the global design calender in 2009.
As an internationally active platform for contemporary design, DMY International Design Festival Berlin occupies an independent spot in the events-calendar formed by leading design fairs and festivals. Thereby DMY Berlin adjusts itself time-wise to Milan, New York and Frankfurt.
