And the winners are…

Three out of ten – On Friday, June 11 the DMY Award winners were announced at the evening Award Ceremony. The winners are For use/numen: Tape Installation, Daphna Isaacs & Laurens Manders: Tafelstukken and EPFL+ECAL Lab: Give me more.

The jury members Jerszy Seymour, Hella Jongerius, Jurgen Bey, Werner Aisslinger and Patrick Reymond were impressed by the experimental approach of the Austro-Croatian designers For use / numen who created an architectural socializing place with a very simple material: tape. They acknowledged the close collaboration between designers and engineers within the Swiss research institute EPFL + ECAL Lab who showed augmented reality scenarios combining analogue materials and digital applications pointing to charming ways of designing and living in the near future.

Awarding Daphna Isaacs & Laurens Manders, Hella Jongerius as a representative of the jury, pointed out that Berlin stands out in terms of research, experimenting and prototyping but it is also important to acknowledge the finishing of products and that is why the jury chose this accomplishment of a very tactile and nicely functioning product. Congratulations!

DMY annually highlights the most exceptional works in contemporary product design. The DMY Award winners are selected from a group out of ten projects, nominated by the international festival jury: Jurgen Bey, Jerszy Seymour, Werner Aisslinger, Patrick Reymond and Hella Jongerius will designate the Award-winning projects during on-site exhibition visits, followed by an evening Award ceremony on Friday June 11, 7.30 pm.

This year’s nominees show a very diverse picture, acknowledging interesting, out of the box approaches rather than just honouring the final outcomes. The range oscillates between the formally straightforward and the playfully modifiable; objects with a crafted identity; poetic and hilarious socializing spaces; narrative and even disquietingly dominating sculptures. Altogether three design schools, the backbone of the festival’s experimental exhibition, have entered the top ten with strong showings of craftmanship, engineering and contemporary high tech.

Twisting the concept of a fair, the exhibiting designers of the festival are chosen based on the recommendation of an international admission jury. Highlighting the most outstanding works and projects, the festival jury selects the nominees and designates the winners of the DMY Awards at a ceremonial event during the festival (Award Ceremony: Flughafen Berlin Tempelhof, June 11, 7.30 pm).

From 2010 on, we will work with a permanent festival jury, designated for the next three years, that will act as an advisory board for the festival, its themes and direction. The jury will be joined by two guest jurors changing every year.

Members of the standing Festival Jury are:

Jurgen Bey (designer, Studio Makkink&Bey)

The dutch designer Jurgen Bey has already attracted attention beyond the borders of modern product design and the Netherlands with his early works with the Droog design collective. The Treetrunk Bench and the Gardening Bench have become iconic works in the field of product design and represent his approach to regard design as an open investigation: His works like to rather raise questions than just give answers. In 2002, Bey and architect Rianne Makkink founded Studio Makkink&Bey. Recently, both started their own experimental furniture label Prooff. Beside his many projects and exhibitions, Jurgen Bey is also a senior design tutor at the Royal College of Art in London. In 2010, he has been appointed director of Sandberg Institute, Amsterdam.

Jerszy Seymour (designer, Jerszy Seymour Design Workshop)

Since 2004 canadian designer Jerszy Seymour is working and living again in his native city Berlin. After his studies at the Royal College of Art in London, he started his own experimental and conceptual projects in Milan, which formed the central thrust of his work. In parallel, he designed for companies like Vitra, Moulinex, SFR and IDEE. Aside from different teaching activities, his work is held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Vitra Design Museum (Basel and Berlin), the Palais de Tokyo, Paris and the Design Museum London.

Werner Aisslinger (designer, Studio Aisslinger)

The works of the designer Werner Aisslinger cover the spectrum of experimental, artistic approaches, including industrial design and architecture. He delights in making use of the latest technologies and has helped introduce new materials and techniques to the world of product design like in his unique gel furniture with the collection“soft cell“ and the chaise „soft“ for zanotta in 2000. Werner Aisslinger´s „loftcube“–project became one of the most discussed modular and transportable housing projects within the last years. Werner Aisslinger has been developing furniture with Italian brands like Cappellini, Zanotta, Magis and Vitra. His work is exhibited in the permanent collections of international museums such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the French Fonds National d´Art Contemporain in Paris, the Museum Neue Sammlung in Munich and the Vitra Design Museum in Weil, Germany.

Guest jury members 2010 are:

Hella Jongerius (designer, Jongeriuslab)

Dutch Designer Hella Jongerius has become known for the special way she fuses industry and craft, high and low tech, tradition and the contemporary in her works. After graduating at Eindhoven Design Academy she started her own design company, Jongeriuslab, through which she produces projects for clients such as Maharam, Vitra or Ikea as well as her own projects, which has been shown at international galleries and museums (MoMA, Moss gallery in New York, Design Museum in London, Galerie KREO in Paris).
