For the first time in South America, DMY Berlin presents six Berlin-based designers in the Unesco City of Design Buenos Aires celebrating 15 years of vibrant exchange between the twin cities Berlin – Buenos Aires.

The group show introduces a variety of unique editions that deal with the topic „material“ in diverse ways. The exhibition presents unconventional applications of different matters in design, such as in the knitted light object „Matt“ from the Berlin design group llot llov, the sensual light objects from Heike Buchfelder that are made out of goose and rooster feathers, or as the hammock made by the Berlin label Bless, that gives you the opportunity to relax in a coyote coat. Sustainable use of materials are shown by Erik van Buuren and Matthias Ries. Ries’ shelf system is made out of a single piece of steel, that can be easily modified by the user. Erik van Buuren’s wallpaper „Barns“ is sustainably produced and meets eco-friendly criteria. The „Hammerlamp“ by Rupert Kopp displays an archaic form, bringing out the nature of the raw material.

The exhibition takes part within the annual event series “mes de diseño” and will be showcased from the 22nd of October until the 12th of November at the Centro Metropolitano de Diseño (www.cmd.gov.ar) in Buenos Aires.

We are witnessing the emergence of a different understanding of design both on the part of the creators and the end user. Nowadays designers often turn away from the  traditional industrial attitude and towards the creation of rather experimental and emotionally striking objects. By introducing unusual materials, surprising formal inventions and modifications, these works challenge the user to rethink his or her  accustomed view of objects and of their role in our daily lives. In doing so contemporary design at times develops the virility necessary to make us reflect upon our customary lifestyles and consumption habits.

The exhibition Berlin Buenos Aires is funded by the Berliner Landesinitiative Projekt Zukunft and co-financed by the EuropeanFund for Regional Development (EFRE). Taking place in cooperation with the Centro Metropolitano de Diseño and Fuhrmann Design Group.
