Vienna Design Week 2008

Lecture & Klublabor in Vienna 4 October 2008 Bombay Sapphire Lounge at OffroomTaborstrasse 18, Vienna, Austriaviennadesignweek.at

From day one, the Klublabor has been an essential feature of the DMY festival programme – and for a good reason: indeed, what better place to consolidate acquaintances made during the daytime than the nightly atmosphere of a pulsating metropolis with great drinks and wonderful music? While past years’ events took place at the central exhibition site of the Arena Berlin, 2008 saw the DMY Klublabor embark on a tour of the city’s internationally renowned clubs, such as the Cookies, the Bar 25 or the Weekend.

On October 4th, the DMY Klublabor hits the road once again with a trip to the Vienna Design Week, before departing for Tokyo via London. The evening will open with a lecture by Joerg Suermann, manager and curator of DMY Berlin, who will address the theme of Berlin-based design.

While Milan is synonymous with furniture design and Paris with fashion, Berlin is associated with a wide creative spectrum. This, amongst others, lead to the fact that Berlin has become an increasingly popular converging point for the international design scene. On top of this, Berlin was awarded the title of “City of Design” by the UNESCO in 2006, therefore becoming officially part and parcel of the global network of creative cities. Joerg Suermann has been firmly implanted in Berlin’s creative scene since the mid-nineties, creating the design platform DMY Berlin in 2003. His lecture will focus on the changes and the perspectives shaping Berlin design.

The event will be rounded off with a public debate during which Brigitte Jank, president of the Vianna Economic Chamber and Joerg Suermann will discuss the creative hubs that are Berlin and Vienna.

At the end of the evening, the DMY Klublabor DJ team featuring Female Macho, LauraLeo and Barry Mendez will dutifully rock the house. The event will take place at the Bombay Sapphire Lounge in the OFROOM, the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK nightly meeting point. Rock on!
